Sir, The lives of millions of children of my generation were blighted by selective education ("Rules of Grammar", leading article, May 27). It is a system based on the absurd premise that at the young age of 11 children can be divided into categories of "able" and "the rest". These supposedly able children then receive a privileged education paid for by the parents of the 80 per cent of children rejected by the system.
